Shingles are definitely the way go if you own a classic, colonial, or brick home and are interested in metal roofing. They will allow you to retain that traditional look. Shingles are the second most popular style of metal roofing after standing seam, though they often cost less. Metal roofing shingles come in a variety of materials which look convincingly hard to distinguish from the real thing. They are most commonly made from galvanized steel and aluminum. Copper and zinc shingles also exist. Compared to regular asphalt shingles, metal roofing shingles have a low profile and four-way interlocking design, which makes them easier and safer to install.
This installation system starts from the bottom up. The first layer of shingles is hooked onto the starting trim which is screwed to the prepared roof deck. Nails or built-in clips can be used to affix the shingles. After the first layer is secured, the following layers are staggered so as to "build a stair." Rows are set up diagonally instead of from one side of the roof to another in order to fit as many metal roofing shingles as possible into each run and as many runs as possible onto the roof.
